Transition Day for the Primary School

Transition day (for the local Primary children who will be moving up to Secondary School in September), went very well on Monday, 8th June, at St Paul’s.

I am very grateful for the Churches Together Youth Trust for their presence and support. It was ecumenism at its best and without their enthusiasm and love for the young people this day would not have happened.

We had about 60 children and they were able to share their hopes and worries about moving from primary school to secondary school. Initially, when I asked about who was worried or anxious about going to secondary school many hands went up.

We split the children into 8 groups, where they played games, shared their thoughts, and got to know children from other primary schools. We reflected on the story of Jesus calming the storm, and how we can call on Him to calm our anxiety and worries.

At the end of the session, I asked who was still worried and just a few hands came up this time. The children told us that participating in that morning was very helpful, and they did not feel scared anymore as they had now met others and had their fears addressed.

Fun and Friendship

On Wednesday, 16th June, we held our Fun and Friendship event for this school term.  The theme was ‘Here Comes Summer’.

Annette started the session with a talk, a song and a prayer before we split into groups.  Crafts included an incredibly detailed beach scene on a biscuit, complete with a sandy shore, bathing teddy bear and a parasol.  Well done, Gill, for working all that out!  A large daisy chain was made for display on the notice board at the front of the church.  Other activities included making butterflies, tissue flowers and paper boats.  It was a lively session, as usual, with lots of fun had by everyone.

The activities finished with singing, prayers and a blessing.

 

 

A Concert for Charles Edmondson

GLORIANA CHOIR

A Concert for Charles Edmondson RIP

This was a most delightful afternoon, presented by the Gloriana Choir (a group which was organised by Charles in 2005) under the leadership of Jane Thedham, and comprised choral pieces selected originally by Charles to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the dedication of the two-manual pipe organ in St. Paul’s –  plus a couple of surprise items.

The 16 choristers performed magnificently, their repertoire ranging from Baroque  anthems through more modern composers (Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, Sir John Rutter) to pieces from stage and screen (The Vicar of Dibley and Moon River).  Andy Plowman accompanied on piano and organ, and also gave two solo pieces on the organ – a delicate work by Percy Whitlock.

The finale was a roof-lifting (I glanced up apprehensively) rendering of the Gloria from a Mass composed by Charles some years ago.  This was a brilliant work and made us realise – alas, perhaps too tardily – just what a magnificent musician Charles was.  The word Handelesque sprang to mind as organ and voices rang out together in a rousing, magnificent crescendo.

Our thanks go to our talented performers, to Eileen and members of Charles’s family who joined us, to Jane for her skills, and to our catering ladies whose scones, jam and tea rounded off a most agreeable and uplifting afternoon.

Spring Fair 2026

A successful Spring Fair raised over £1,300 for church funds, thanks to a dedicated team of helpers and, of course, very generous customers!  A happy morning was spent enjoying fellowship, along with the bacon butties!
