The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Sunday, 18th January, saw the start of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity which began with a united service organised by Churches Together, at St Paul’s Parish Church. The theme for this year – ‘The well is deep’ – came from the churches of Brazil, where traditionally Brazilians have been tolerant of their various social classes and ethnic groups and are now living through a time of growing intolerance again minorities and the vulnerable. The Gospel reading was the story of Jesus and the woman from Samaria he asked for a drink at the well (St John 4). Members from each of the different denominations took part, and the preacher was Lawrence Moore, Director of the URC Windermere Centre, who reminded us that it is 108 years since we started praying for Christian Unity and asked how far we had come.

Throughout the week 30 minutes of prayer will be held each weekday at the different churches within Grange.
